Brian Sackinsky |
|
Former major leaguer Brian Sackinsky was originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 39th round out of Pennsylvania’s South Park HS. While in high school, Sackinsky pitched for the silver medal-winning East Team in the Oklahoma City Junior Olympic festival, where he struck out twelve against the North Team. Later, while pitching for the Junior National Team USA, he was named best right-handed pitcher after striking out twenty hitter against team Brazil.
Sackinsky turned down Baltimore’s offer, instead opting to attend perennial NCAA Div I powerhouse Stanford University. HIs stellar freshman season included a 10-1 record and an opportunity to pitch in the NCAA College World Series, where he went 2-0 and was the winning pitcher in Stanford’s win over the eventual national champions, the University of Georgia. Sackinsky went on to become Stanford’s 4th winningest pitcher all-time (19-4) and graduated with a degree in economics in 3 1/2 years.
In the 1992 Amateur Baseball Draft, the Orioles once again selected Sackinsky, this time in the 2nd round (42nd overall selection). His first professional team, the Bluefield Orioles, won the Appalachian League title in 1992. While pitching for AA Bowie in 1994, Sackinsky went 11-7 with a 3.36 ERA, striking out 145 hitters in 177 innings.
Brian made his Major League debut with the Orioles on April 20, 1996. In four inning of relief against the Texas Rangers, he allowed only one run while striking out Juan Gonzalez and Mickey Tettleton. Sackinsky had reconstructive elbow surgery in May of 1997 and returned to pitching one year later. |
